IT-TEACHER is an Internet mailing list which brings together Information Technology (IT) teachers across New South Wales for the purpose of sharing and solving mutual problems relating to the teaching of IT in TAFE NSW. The mailing list was started by a teacher at Sydney Institute of Technology (SIT) using his own computer and Internet account at home with the aim of reducing the isolation felt by new teachers in their subject areas. It now has over 70 members of new and experienced teachers and continues to grow. Show less

TAFE has encouraged teachers to adopt flexible teaching and learning practices. This paper outlines the experiences of two flexible learning coordinators while working to foster the development of flexible learning practices in their Institutes. The Coordinators have grappled with the issues of how to encourage teachers and staff to adopt flexible teaching and learning practices and how to support cultural change. A workshop analysis tool has been developed which will encourage teachers to take ownership of any changes to their teaching and learning environments in order to meet their learners’ needs. This paper describes a survey undertaken to assess the post-school destination (employment and/or further education) of former students of the Joint Secondary Schools TAFE (JSSTAFE) program within the New England Institute of TAFE. The paper includes the aim of the survey, the methodology used, the results, and the key findings. Also included are the survey questionnaire and tables of the data collected. Show less

This paper discusses the various issues, problems, and difficulties that can arise when conducting student selection within the TAFE environment, particularly in regard to selecting students for high demand courses. One such course, the Asia Pacific Marketing Advanced Diploma, has been used as a case study to investigate and analyse the issues of student selection and to trial the written application and interview method of selection. A trial of an application and interview selection method was held during January 1996. Preliminary results and experiences gained from this trial are presented. Show less

This is a summary of a research project undertaken in 1997 to determine reasons for a perceived lack of successful outcomes in the National Teaching and Learning Program (NTL) in the Riverina Institute of TAFE (RIT).

By way of a questionnaire the researchers surveyed part time teachers who had participated in the program.

This paper examines how well knowledge based systems (KBS) can support behavioural areas of management, specifically in the provision of human resource management services. Results of the trial of one expert system - CHAOS - designed to control the recruitment and selection process demonstrate improved reliability of decision making at management level. The results also indicate potential for KBS development in the area of organisational behaviour. Show less

There is a large and growing level of interest in delivery of Flexible Learning at TAFE and elsewhere, some of it driven by budget constraints.

This survey set out to gauge the level of interest among TAFE Communication students and teachers around NSW. The first stage of analysis of the large amount of data is complete.

The lack of anywhere near a majority of clients with easy Internet access, and the differential between the teachers’ access to the technology and that of the students, raises access and equity issues for TAFE. Show less

The aim of the FlexiModel project is to increase access for students with disabilities in certain contexts. Various methodologies in action research identified approaches to open learning using existing materials, and also the competencies of the open learning facilitator in such an environment. The pilot has students undertaking various self-paced courses through distance education and faculty open learning situations, coming together as a 'class' on how to learn using self-paced packages. The rehabilitation community is showing acceptance through increased enrolments and by reimbursement of costs for flexibility not previously available. However, the pilot has identified administrative problems which will continue to plague new approaches until such systems allow for the flexibility increasingly demanded by clients. Show less

The political imperatives which drive policy directions in vocational education and training (VET) usually demand a fast policy implementation response. Despite calls to link research into policy and practice, there is rarely sufficient time to design and carry out systematic research to assist policy implementation. At the policy implementation stage, pressing research questions are typically: what types of data are needed, and how can that data be collected and analysed in time to be of use? This paper describes how research techniques were adapted or 'fast-tracked' to assist the development, by TAFE NSW, of an action plan for the implementation of a state-wide, Ministerial policy relating to access and equity.
